Is Sedation Dentistry Safe for Kids?

Just like adults, children can experience anxiety and fear when it comes to visiting a dentist. However, that shouldn't prevent parents from taking their child to regular appointments with a pediatric dentist. Even if the little one is scared, there are plenty of sedation options nowadays that can help alleviate their fears.

But, is sedation dentistry safe for kids?

Yes!

Not only is it safe, but it can also prevent the child from getting even more scared and making future dentist visits an even bigger problem.

Types of Sedation for Kids

Most types of sedation will calm the nerves of your child without making them fall asleep. It's called conscious sedation and it's an excellent way to keep your little one calm and relaxed during various dental procedures.

Based on what your child needs, your dentist may recommend one of these options:

Laughing Gas

Your child will inhale this sedative through a mask. In just a few minutes, they will feel relaxed and will be able to better cooperate with the dentist. After the procedure, the dentist will give your kid pure oxygen to help eliminate the remaining laughing gas.

Oral Sedation

This is another way to help your child relax before the procedure starts. The dental pediatrician will give your child a pill to take before they begin. The pill does not make them fall asleep. There are different types of medications, but your doctor will choose one depending on your kid's medical history and health condition.

Intravenous Sedation

This option is used when a deeper level of sedation is needed. This sedation will put your child to sleep without leaving them unconscious. The child will not be very aware of what the dentist is doing, and it is also possible he will not remember what happened while under IV sedation.

Talk to Your Dentist

The type of sedation your doctor might recommend depends on the procedure your kid has to go under. If it’s a more complex one, stronger sedation would be best to avoid a traumatic experience.

It is important to talk to your child’s dentist and see what is best suited for them, what to take into account before the procedure, as well as after.
